After years spent working as a firefighter and lighting designer, I fell in love with wine in New York City while bartending my way through graduate school. Several years later, when long nights behind the bar became draining instead of exciting, I was hunting for ways to keep my passion for wine alive, and returning to California started sounding pretty good. As a Certified Sommelier, I knew California produced some fantastic wines, and as a native to Amador county I was certain the area had potential to grow. So in June of 2014 I packed up my apartment and headed home to start Little John Lane Vineyard, driving across the United States (and tasting as much local wine I could find) ready to plant vines on the property surrounding my childhood home in Pioneer, California. Nestled in the Sierra Foothills of Amador county, the region’s wine history dates back to the Gold Rush. While Amador is known for Zinfandel, I believe the higher elevations are the perfect haven for Rhone varieties which is my focus on the home property, where I am planting ten acres of vines with my family. From classics like Syrah and Grenache to obscure varieties like Picpoul and Clairette Blanche my goal is to produce distinct wines that showcase the unique environment of the foothills, with minimal intervention in the winery. At Little John Lane, I’m committed to practicing organic farming and treating the land with more than a little love–I grew up in these hills, and I’ll do whatever it takes to preserve them for future generations, even if that means I spend a lot more time on my knees pulling weeds. While my home vineyard comes of age, I started The End of Nowhere label to showcase grapes grown by other small farmers in the Sierra Foothills. The goal of the label is to approach well known varietals in a different way, showing their full range. The wines are made by native yeast fermentations, and are not fined, filtered or modified save for minimal SO2. For many, wine is liquid travel. For me, it’s home. I hope you enjoy Little John Lane and The End of Nowhere wines until the last sip. All three vineyards are farmed organically.

The Broc Cellars story begins with a move from Nebraska to California. Chris Brockway grew up in Omaha and felt drawn to wine. Specifically spicy, brambly Zinfandels from California, and took a leap to move out West. He received an oenology degree from Fresno State and began making his first wine in 2002 – it was just one barrel. The following year he made three barrels, and by 2004 had 14 barrels of wine to call his own. Broc Cellars was born and had its first official release in 2006. At the time, the mentality surrounding California wines was “bigger is better”. Chris personally felt the wines to be too big, too much alcohol, too much everything. He set out to do something else. In 2008 he moved to his first winery space in Berkeley, which was originally known as Grape Leaf Cellars, located only one block away from where we are now. This is where Broc found its way.
In his first winemaking years in Berkeley, Chris sourced from only a handful of vineyards in California. Arrowhead Mountain Vineyard, an organically farmed Zinfandel vineyard in Sonoma, was one of the first places Chris purchased fruit from starting in 2006 and continues to make wine from this special vineyard today. Chris learned that picking before what was considered ripe in California at the time produced wines that he really enjoyed drinking. This was true for not only the Zinfandel from Arrowhead, but all the other vineyards he worked with. Picking before the grapes got too ripe led to fresher, lighter wines that were lower in alcohol - they showed the special character of the vineyard. Today, the Vine Starr Zinfandel is still recognized as one of the most fresh and balanced Zinfandels made from California.
In 2009, Chris made his first vintage of Carignan using carbonic maceration and it was also the first year he experimented with skin contact whites, making a Rousanne. Another wine that paved the way for Broc early on was the whole cluster Cabernet Franc, now known as KouKou. In 2010 Chris began working with Cabernet Franc from Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara and made it using whole cluster fermentation. The wines made in 2009 and 2010 were unlike most wines being made in California at the time and were building blocks for how Broc wines are made today.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0403/3655/6193/products/9b7b055c182f3795a8dbc92e4631e5aa.jpg?v=1644623995
press-gang-savanna-rhea-rose-of-grenache-santa-rita-hills-ca-2021
Press Gang - 'Savanna Rhea' - Rosé of Grenache - Santa Rita Hills, CA - 2021

This refreshing rosé gives off gorgeous herbaceous aromas. With its racing acidity, concentration, and ample body, I believe it will show balance and beauty at any point in its lifetime. Drink now if you’d like to experience more of its fruit, or age as you please to continue to accentuate its body. This wine has an autumnal thread running through it. Drinking it any time of year, I am transported to a rocky Mediterranean coast, where fall is still warm. I can smell sea air, ripe prickly pears, and herbs drying in the golden September sun.

Our very own Bricarelli Ranch Negroamaro fruit has such incredible concentration; we age this wine not according to its category (rosé, which would not usually have long elevage), but by what the fruit in this unique parcel dictates. Also very unique for rosé: we barrel ferment and age this wine on lees, after a good foot treading and an overnight maceration on the stems and skins. This wine is always textured, but this year we moved to a non vintage blend to accentuate these layers even more: NV no 1 is 80% 2019, which brings in rich aged notes, and 20% 2020, which uplifts the blend with a little more fruit character.

Vinification Notes:
This non-vintage edition of our Negroamaro Rosato contrasts the savory characteristic from a extended, neutral French oak barrel aging program (2 ½ years) with the freshness and bright concentration found in grapes from 2020. The majority of the blend results from 2019’s Negroamaro harvest at Bricarelli Ranch, a wine made using our traditional, Italian-inspired “Vino di una notte” rosato technique: gently food-treading the grapes and resting the juice on skins overnight before pressing the slightly extracted juice the following morning. In 2020 the concentration of the fruit was unmistakable: spicy, sweet, and very concentrated — no foot-treating required! The juice was fermented in neutral French oak barrels and throughout the 10-month elevage we found the fruit-forward characteristics carried through.
Vineyard: Bricarelli Ranch (formerly Benson Ranch), Mendocino County; 15-year-old vines; dry farmed (no irrigation), farmed and leased by us; farmed using only organic products; no use of pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers; gravelly loam soils.
Tasting Notes: This cotton candy colored stunner has ample body and racing acidity. A concept born out of the affiliation of my own philosophies of farming and winemaking (which indeed spill over to inform so many of my life beliefs) and one small but very significant text in the Old Testament of the Bible, the book of Ruth. Without sounding 'preachy' and so as not to offend the sensitive, and in the interest of concisely summing things up, I don't believe there to be a deeper, more compelling depiction of the natural cycle of death and redemption (both in the physical realm we can see and the spiritual realm we often do not) than this one short book.

Death is, indeed, the engine of life
Nothing that is alive today could be so without something having died first. From the wreckage of death and tragedy at the beginning of the book of Ruth, a young woman finds life, finds beauty and is able to truly live....not simply in spite of the death, but because the death occurred at all. The regeneration of the life of our soils occurs only through organic matter...all completely dead, broken down carbon-based items. A natural fermentation is the building up and dying off of multiple strains of yeast and bacteria, each paving the way for the next strain to take over (and each leaving their altogether unique signatures of flavor, aroma, and textural compounds).

Who is Ruth? The floor is consistently covered in dainty pink and purple flowers for the majority of the growing season. We don’t sow these seeds, they are native to the Santa Ynez watershed and are what have been growing on this land since the Chumash inhabited the area. This certified-organic vineyard is situated near the southern gate of Yosemite on rolling hills at about 2,000 feet above sea level. The climate is very hot there; it can get up to 90 degrees F by 10am. The soils are free-draining granitic granitic schist. This combination of factors means the grapes ripen quickly, and fruit from Love Ranch is often the first into the winery each year. Because the mourvedre and grenache noir had low yields, we decided to add Carignan from Aspesi Ranch, an old-vine vineyard near Fresno that is farmed organically by Oscar Ramos, who also farms Love Ranch. We also added a touch of early picked viognier to give some acidity to the blend.
Winemaking: This is a carbonic co-ferment wine that we made in several tanks, each of which we treated differently. With Antonio’s winemaking experience and openness to experiment using a non-intervention approach in the cellar, the Bojo do Luar wines started to take shape. The region has a mostly cool temperate climate throughout Spring, then very warm days, and cool nights until the harvest in September. Five red grape varietals and three whites were chosen for their natural high levels of tartaric acids and low PH.

The parcels are located near the Tâmega river, with deep granitic soils and south-south-western exposure, not too far from where it empties into the Douro River. The land was purchased in 2 parcels, in 2000 and 2001. In 2003 Biodynamic preparations started to be added to our land in homeopathic quantities, setting the scene for the Earth to function in as healthy a way as possible. Vines and olive trees in the lower vineyard were planted in 2003 and the upper vineyards in 2005. Each vine had 5 gallons of water from a drip bucket prior to a winter season and that is all the water that was provided to establish themselves, the rest came from rainfall. The first decent year for harvest was in 2010, 2011 would have been a good year but a late frost destroyed half the crop. Then we were hit with 5 years of drought with extremely minimum rainfall followed by 2 years of near average. The vines have survived and now are producing what we believe to be the best quality juice for wine in the region. We are stewards of the land, doing the best we can. Learning from others and mostly ourselves with what we are given.
Right in between Los Angeles and San Francisco and just south of Paso Robles and north of San Luis Obispo, the estate vineyards are situated on a saddle ridge atop a nobby hill in the middle of a vortex thats known as the Templeton Gap. Cool Pacific Ocean air filters through the Santa Lucia Mountains along the central coast and gets pulled almost every day into the Creston Valley extending West to East, making our appellation 5 or more degrees cooler than surrounding areas. This wind also helps keep the vines dry and free of mildews and molds and doesnt allow large colonies of bugs to establish throughout the growing season (which helps with our theories of farming). Steep hillsides allow the plants to extend their dry farmed roots into ancient substrate of sedimentary rock and deposits of Limestone, Sandstone, Calcarous Clays, and Clay Loam. A mixture known as Linne Calodo. This minerality and acidity the vines extract from the ground can easily be identified in our estate wines.
BIODYNAMIC FARMING
Biodynamics is a farming method made popular by philosopher Rudolf Steiner through a series of lectures given to farmers and landowners in 1924. Biodynamic agriculture arose out of a response to the widespread use of commercial fertilizers and the observations of soil depletion by farmers just after the turn of the century. It is now gaining increased attention for its emphasis on superior food quality and soil health. It is an approach to agriculture in which the whole of creation (the cosmos)—the air, water, soil, sun and moon are interconnected and thus play a role in every action taken upon our land. It is holistic, natural and healing.
We apply homeopathic doses of naturally occurring plant and animal materials to our compost pile, our vines and the soil in the vineyards and orchards. Biodynamic farming not only encourages the elimination of all chemicals used in farming, but encourages the farmer to pay close attention to the forces of nature influencing his/her farm entity.
DEMETER CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC WINES
AmByth Estate is Paso Robles’ First Winery to Produce Demeter Certified Biodynamic Wines. We gained our certification from the Demeter Association in 2006. We utilize the Biodynamic method of farming to enhance our observations of nature, and use these intimate insights as tools that allow our 20 acres of vineyards to express their true character through the grapes it produces. We want our grapes to be as unique to AmByth Estate as your thumbprint is to you. The estate consists of 20 acres of vineyards and 600 olive trees dedicated to Biodynamic farming principles since their initial planting. 20 acres of untouched oak forests surround the vineyards.
At the heart of Biodynamic farming is the commitment to create a self-sustaining and diverse estate. We are a vineyard farm! A vital role to sustaining farmed land is the use of aged compost, inserted with the Biodynamic preparations, and applied yearly. This compost fertilizes, rejuvenates and enlivens the soil, creating healthy plants, balanced ecosystems and exceptional crop production. Today the domaine is a winery, brewery and mixed use farm that encompasses 500 hectares of organic farmland. Over the years Guillaume has brought back many vine cuttings taken from massale selection and grafted them onto his rootstock and now makes single parcel bottlings from these vines, including Vermentino and Sciacarello from Antoine Abatucci’s vines and Sereine (a historic, locally adapted variety of Syrah) from Hermitage. Everything is harvested by hand, fermentations are with native yeasts and whether sulfur is added at bottling depends on the vintage and cuvée. My personal journey has certainly shaped my sommelier’s palate, my gentle approach to winemaking, and the restrained, food-friendly style of my wines. I was born and raised in Denmark, and as the son of a chef and hotelier, food and wine have always been a passionate part of my life. I grew up in the service industry, and started working in my father’s kitchen at the age of 12. When I was older, I earned a degree in business sales and marketing, but food and wine were in my blood, and I soon began studying at the Kolding Hotel and Restaurant School. During my four-year apprenticeship there, I was very fortunate to work alongside Orla Farmann, the national champion for the Danish Sommelier World Cup Team. Orla helped me develop my palate, and further deepened my love of wine.
Over the next several years, my love of wine took me many places, from Alsace, Loire, Champagne and Burgundy to Spain and Italy. Those travels culminated in my certification as a European sommelier, and in 1997, I became the wine director at Kong Hans, Copenhagen’s first one-star Michelin guide restaurant. In time, my work at Kong Hans took me to California to scout out new wines for our list. I felt an immediate connection with California’s vibrant winemaking scene—both the quality of its wines and the freedom given to its winemakers.
In 1999, I moved to California to immerse myself in winemaking firsthand, and spent the next several years working days in wineries and nights as a sommelier. (My grape-stained fingers were part of the inspiration for the sommelier’s print.) At the same time, I complemented my practical experience by studying chemistry, viticulture and winemaking. My journey led me to Stuhlmuller Vineyards an acclaimed, family-run winery in the Alexander Valley, where I ultimately became winemaker in 2004—the same year I founded Leo Steen Wines.
Since then, I have worked to hone my craft, always with an eye towards that place where style and vineyard authenticity naturally meet. My classically trained European palate is a part of that equation. So is my appreciation for the charm and character of great California winemaking. As a result, I have developed a gentle approach that focuses more on natural yeasts, lower alcohols and less new oak. The winemaker in me thinks about the vineyards I am privileged to work with, and what I love about them. While my sommelier side reminds me that great wine finds is most elegant expression served alongside good food in the company of family and friends. This tip came from Angela Fronti, our Chianti Classico producer and a great wine-taster. Roccafiore was her suggestion: fresh, delicious Grechetto di Todi and Sangiovese, both grown near Todi in Umbria. Indigenous varieties, low-input but absolutely clean winemaking, dry wines (not a given these days), general deliciousness.

Cantina Roccafiore farms 15 hectares (almost 40 acres) of vineyards in the rolling hills of the Umbrian countryside near the town of Todi. The Baccarelli family (father and son) bought the property in 1999, planted the local Grechetto and Sangiovese along with small parcels of Moscato Giallo, Sagrantino, and Montepulciano, and made their first vintage in 2005. Formerly in the energy business, they kept a mind toward sustainability from the beginning, building a renewable facility, using organic fuels for their tractors, and farming organically. Young Luca Baccarelli feels that this form of cultivation makes for soils richer in organic materials, fewer vine diseases, and healthier grapes. (See more on their sustainability program below). The training system is Guyot, on terraced hillsides; the soils are whitish clay, rich in limestone and chalk; and all vineyards face South East catching fresh winds from the nearby mountains. There are 6,500 vines per hectare, mostly from massal selection, and the yield is 85 quintals of grapes per hectare (roughly 3.5 tons per acre). Indigenous yeast fermentations. They use only estate-grown fruit.

“Working in a sustainable way, for us, means:

reducing the co2 using solar panels, all the required energy comes from this source;

reducing any environmental impact using organic fuels on the tractors (sunflower oil);

using light-glass bottles for reducing the weight on the shipping process;

saving rainwaters in a reservoir that is used for irrigation (not of vineyards);

low intervention and organic farming system on the vineyards for the care of the soil;

reducing the use of electric machinery on the winery using the gravity;

the winery is very efficient in terms of energetic consumption and refrigeration (production on the basement).”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0403/3655/6193/products/825991551c7863a9cfcd267f823b642e.jpg?v=1664682987
kolfok-intra-the-wild-rose-of-blaufrankisch-burgenland-at-2021
Kolfok - 'INTRA! Wines are left to age in barrel for as long as they need and then bottled unfined/unfiltered before further bottle aging.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0403/3655/6193/products/d32e5ca649e193552bf270d402d07340.jpg?v=1667684588
fongoli-rose-of-sagrantino-montefalco-umbria-it-2021-1000ml
Fongoli - Rosé of Sagrantino - Montefalco, Umbria, IT - 2021 - 1000ml

Here's the deal with this 1000ml bottle of pink magic. Throughout the nineties into the aughts, we would ask “Giampiero, is there no one in Umbria working the way you do and making real wines?” The response was always a half-hearted pause in the guise of rumination and then a definitive “No.” We imagine his response remains the same today.
Over the course of time Montefalco wines have been driven in demand in good part because of Bea’s great work and as a result there’s been a blossoming of wineries and vineyards. It was the Etna before there was ETNA! The trendy region for the in-the-know wine group. Since the late nineties, it seemed the area was taking a turn for the worse - spoofy wines, made for quantity and consistency rather than terroir. But more recently, there is a swing back to less immediate, more traditional and stoic wines – the wines that actually express the work in the vineyard and the grape and soils of the region.
Angelo Fongoli is the fourth generation to be making wine at the Fongoli family estate. Since the early 2010’s, Angelo has taken the estate--that was, of course, until the eighties a poly-cultural farm using conventional systemic viticulture, then moved towards an almost monoculture farm--back to a more diverse farming culture concentrating on biodynamic techniques. The estate is now almost 40 hectares of vines, vineyards, olive trees, forest and natural truffle production. About 20 of these hectares are now planted in traditional grape varieties of the region – Trebbiano Spoletino, Grechetto, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Sagrantino – the oldest of which are more than 40 years old. The vines have been certified organic by Ecocert since 2013, and since then only the use of sulfur and limited copper on the vines, the planting of soveccia - legumes, grains and other nitrogen-rich, complex-rooted plants that open the soil and add nutrients. More recently, Angelo with his wife Letizia have begun working the farm completely in biodynamic techniques, seeking quality grapes over quantity production. They are fully satisfied with the results and now make the wines without the addition of sulfur or any other enological products.
The vinifications range from stainless steel with and without temperature control to aging in barrels or demi-muid. They also make two wines in anfora that are made in the nearby town of Deruta – Maceratum for the 100% Trebbiano Spoletino white and Fracanton for the 100% Sagrantino red made in the style of his grandfather and great-grandfather. There is also a 100% Trebbiano Spoletino metodo ancestrale frizzante refermented in bottle using reserved must. There are also still red and white wines – notably some very traditional Montefalco Rosso, Bicunsio, and a Riserva, Serpullo.
Tasting the wines, we have to say that we think Giampiero is not entirely right. There are winemakers in Umbria with the dedication and respect to their vineyards, terroir and traditional wines. The wines that Angelo and Letizia are making are among the finest from the entire region.
-Louis Dressner Imports

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0403/3655/6193/products/777523219f29de7bf0fced1bacf7fc26.jpg?v=1667684738
storm-rose-of-grenache-santa-barbara-county-ca-2021
Storm - Rosé of Grenache - Santa Barbara County, CA - 2021

The fruit for this Rosé was sourced from Watch Hill Vineyard in the Los Alamos Valley.
