Muxagat is a family-owned property, with Susana Lopes at the helm and she has helped drive awareness of artisan, terroir-focused Douro Valley wines forward through her work. Winemaking is overseen by the legendary, Luis Seabra, widely regarded as the best winemaker in the Douro and one of the most influential wine professionals in Portugal.
Muxagat Tinta Barroca gives us a pure example of a monovarietal wine from high elevation vineyards in the Douro Superior. Sustainably farmed and hand harvested, the wine is fermented with natural yeasts and spends nine months in underground cement tanks on fine lees before bottling. Ruby red color with fresh aroma, notes of dry spices, red fruits and wild berries. This is an easy drinking wine, highly versatile and enjoyable with or without food. Soft tannins and roundness in the mouth but with a long, persistent finish displaying fresh fruits and spices.
The Douro, the oldest demarcated region in the world, reflects the culture and generations of people who for more than 2,000 years have shaped and cultivated the land to give life to a landscape and unique wines. And it was this desire to explore, experiment and create that in 2002 took us to the virgin and inhospitable territory of the Upper Douro to give life to the first wine of Muxagat.
