specogna-pro-fondo-glera-friuli-it-nv
Specogna - 'Pro Fondo' - Glera - Friuli, IT - NV

Notes from the Winery/Importer

The Specogna “Pro Fondo” Surlie Glera is a distinctive sparkling wine from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a renowned region in northeastern Italy. Made entirely from Glera—the same grape used in Prosecco—it showcases a singular interpretation of the area’s terroir and artisanal winemaking heritage.

This wine is produced using the traditional sur lie method, known locally as Colfondo. In this style, a second fermentation takes place in the bottle, and the lees (spent yeast) are left undisturbed. This natural process imparts added complexity and gives the wine its vibrant, unfiltered sparkle.

Notes on the Producer

It all began in the 1963 ...
In 1963 Leonardo Specogna, after residing in Switzerland as an emigrant for some years (typical situation for the people of the Friuli region in those years), went back to Friuli Venezia Giulia and bought a small plot of land on the hills of Rocca Bernarda in Corno di Rosazzo, in the heart of the vineyards in Friuli. These lands have always been devoted to oenology and here the plant of the vine has found the best conditions since Roman times, thanks to the fact that in this oriental strip of land of our region the climate and the soil have features that are unique and exceptional for winemaking. That was the origin of it… It all started with a 360-degree company that covered many aspects of the production for private consumption: dairy, cereal and wine production. Later, when Graziano started working in the company, the management techniques of the vineyards and of the winemaking were improved, making the farm more specifically focused on the winemaking sector. Nowadays, the activity of the company is galvanised by the presence of the third generation of Specogna winemakers Cristian and Michele that long ago have taken the lead of the company. With great passion and commitment they are granting an important company development improving the works in the vineyards and cellars and an expansion of the sales into the most important international markets. Today our company has an overall surface of 30 hectares, 25 of which are vineyards cultivated in organic agricolture. We produce more or less 120000 bottles per year, 50% of which are sold on the national market and 50% in more than 30 countries in the world.

Winemakers are lucky: we have a wonderful job. Nevertheless, it requires great efforts and sacrifices. Very often there are no weekends and no holidays, since we have to work according to the climate conditions of the year that sometimes make the time of intervention extremely tight. For this reason we need to be able to schedule our activity trying to interpret the pedoclimatic features of our area. This interpretation is based on the analysis of the components of the ecosystem that surrounds our plants, and it is carried out studying the features of the climate, the soil and the fauna. We think that, in order to do it in the best possible way, we need to be able to mix new and modern technologies with traditions and the lessons from the past. Why? Because the expertise gathered on the field through the previous decades cannot be forgotten!
Our winemaking and oenological activities can therefore be summarised in the following features:

Analysis of the pedoclimatic features and data collection: in these years we have been trying to concentrate on the analysis of the climatic, weather, pedologic and winemaking aspects of our area studying our work performed on the regional and national levels, trying to understand how to help the plants to adapt in the best possible way to our vineyard and climate. Moreover, we have started an activity of data collection about the climatic features of the year, the number of bunches on each plant, the average weight of each bunch, the average weight of the grapes, the flavour and analytic features of the grapes, etc. All this helped creating a detailed database that helps us interpreting the trend of the different years for a better management also when scheduling the oenological activities.

Vineyard zoning: we have started a project of company zoning in order to be able to choose the best positions that can give value to various vineyards;

Vineyard management. A different approach to plant-protection treatments and topdressing: we believe that an area is more or less predisposed to adversities according to a combination of factors, both natural and artificial. For sure, the climate and the features of the location are the main factors. At the same time, also the position of the vineyards, the modelling of the sides performed on your soils and the treatments you use play their important roles. This is the reason why we want to concentrate on a prevention action to restrain phytophagous insects and cryptogamic adversities of the vineyard thanks to the creation of agrarian environments that are less exposed and predisposed to the overflow of massive infestation. Nowadays all our vineyards are worked according to the dictates of organic farming. All the practices in the vineyards and in the cellar too are performed following the lunar calendar… This may not be the factor that determines the quality of our grapes and wines, but we are sure that DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!

Employment of alternative energy sources: We decided to invest in renewable energies thanks to the photovoltaic panels installed on the roofs of our winery. This action enables us to be completely independent in the electricity consumption and the need of hot water. Our photovoltaic installation extends on 432.30 square meters, with a number of 262 modules for a total energy equal to 60,610.29 kWh per year.
This constant commitment to the search for the perfect balance of our vineyard made us understand how fundamental it is to try to preserve the BIODIVERSITY of our soil as intact as possible! We want to put out maximum effort in this field and for this reason we have started a project to preserve the morphology of the sides of our hill and of its microclimates, through the protection of the trees and of the other species of plants that are typical of our territory. 3 out of 25 hectares of the soil of our winery consist of woods. This is a pivotal factor for the climate regulation of the bordering areas and for the balance of the flora and fauna. Moreover, we have started to plant new plants of rose bushes, olive trees and cherry trees whose root system helps stabilizing the grip of the hill slopes in our area, which are very fragile and delicate due to their tendency to erosion. According to us, all this can lead to SUSTAINABILITY…
We have also set up different bee hives for honey production and to help this insect so fundamental for the environment.
