This 6 hour intensive course is a full introduction to the world of wine. As an entry-level course, it teaches the basics of wine in a friendly format specifically designed for those with little to no previous wine knowledge and for those looking to learn the structured approach to wine tasting.
Ideal for enthusiasts or those new to the wine and service industries, the Foundation Course focuses on the main styles of wine, tasting technique, wine and food pairing, as well as wine service and etiquette.
The class consists of a 6 hour session that concludes with a short 30 question multiple-choice exam.
Please plan for class 10am-5pm
Successful candidates receive the WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines.

INSTRUCTOR
Our instructor is Monica Marin, also our WSET our Program Director! Monica is the full time Director of Wine Education the Wine House in Los Angeles where she has built the next generation of wine professionals for many years (including our own Drew Cuddy, Lindsey Reed, and Paul Zink - as well as our dear friend, former instructor, and Master of Wine Candidate Lenka Davis).
Monica is a long-time WSET instructor and a Master of Wine Candidate. We credit her not only for jump starting our program but bringing WSET education to Los Angeles and the Central Coast! Monica was a top candidate in the 2020 WSET Instructor of the year listing!

What You'll Learn
Wine Tasting: Taste and describe wines using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting
Food and Wine Matching: A practical guide to the key considerations when matching food and wine successfully
Wine Service and Storage: Learn the correct way to store and serve wine and recognize common faults found in wine
Types and Styles of Wine: Learn about what makes wines taste different
Grape Varieties: Learn about the characteristics and styles of wines produced from the main grape varieties
Main White Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling
Main Black Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz
Named Wines: Champagne, Sancerre, Chablis, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Prosecco, Cava, Beaujolais, Côtes du Rhône, Chianti, Rioja, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Sauternes, Sherry, Port
Number of Wines Tasted: At least 8 wines will be tasted as part of the course
Study Materials: Students will receive the Level 1 Award in Wines Study Guide
Duration of Course: 6 hours inclusive of examination
Examination: 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes. A mark of 70% required to pass
Certification: All students who pass will be issued with a certificate suitable for framing and a lapel pin.
