WSET's Level 2 Award in Wines is a beginner- to intermediate-level qualification exploring wines, suitable for industry professionals and wine enthusiasts.
This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.

This class will be taught in-person indoors. Proof of vaccination required for this class.

Our instructor is Lenka Davis! Lenka has been our local WSET Instructor and Director of Education for Satellite since 2017 and holds a Diploma in Wine and Spirits from the WSET. Lenka is currently pursuing her Master of Wine Certification. Lenka is also the Wine Director for both Barbareño and Venus in Furs here in Santa Barbara. She is additionally involved in the Sei Querce winery in Sonoma where she works on their vermouth line. Lenka is a critical part of our wine community in Santa Barbara, and along with our lead instructor Monica Marin, she has trained a generation of wine professionals in the central coast.
Lenka trains in the WSET under Monica Marin, our Program Director, at the Wine House in Los Angeles (along with our owner, Drew Cuddy, and newest instructor, Paul Zink). Monica is a long-time WSET instructor and a Master of Wine Candidate. We credit her not only for jump starting our program but bringing WSET education to Los Angeles and the Central Coast! Monica was a top candidate in the 2020 WSET Instructor of the year listing!

How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®(SAT)
How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:
The style and quality of wines:
made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence key styles of:
Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine
Principles of food and wine pairing
Number of Wines Tasted: At least 20 wines will be tasted as part of the course
Students will receive the Level 2 Intermediate Award in Wines Study Guide
Duration of Course
16 hours (3 Hours Friday, 6.5 Hours Saturday, 6.5 Hours Sunday)
A minimum of 11 additional hours of self-guided study are recommended to succeed in the course.
A one-hour closed-book examination comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions. A mark of 70% required to pass
On successful completion of the examination you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo
There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You must be of legal drinking age in the country where you are attending the course to participate in any alcohol tasting. However, this is not a barrier to successfully completing the qualification. Requirements may vary by course provider.
Class will be held in the Impact Hub, behind Satellite SB - 1117 State Street, Santa Barbara, 93101.
The course will be offered on the outside patio in rear of the building where shade is plentiful!
Alternatively, we are able to offer this course for an in-home environment for an additional $50. Live Zoom and vials of wine are available to those uncomfortable in a group setting. Please be in touch directly with email@example.com for more information.
