Notes on the Producer
The domain Bonnet Huteau is situated in the center of the Muscadet vineyard, in the Sèvre & Maine appellation, 20km from Nantes and 10km from Clisson – a small attractive city in the Italian style, by the river Sèvre Nantaise. This domain has been producing some Muscadet for more than 150 years and was previously a Medieval house where the little town of La Chapelle Heulin finds its roots.Jean-Jacques Bonnet and Vincent Pineau operate the Domaine Bonnet-Huteau, giving their best to develop a whole palette of flavours so that their Muscadet wines express the best quality and minerality for each terroir – gneiss, micaschist, amphibolite and granite.
Grapes & Style
Melon de Bourgogne
Melon de Bourgogne is the white grape of Muscadet, at the western end of the Loire Valley near the Atlantic. Despite the name, it’s not really associated with Burgundy today; its modern identity is tied to the cool, maritime vineyards around Nantes and to wines built around freshness, lees, and salt.
In the vineyard and cellar, Melon is relatively neutral, which is part of its strength. It doesn’t dominate with obvious fruit, so soil, climate, and winemaking details show clearly. Aging sur lie is especially important in classic Muscadet, adding texture and a subtle bread-dough or savory quality without making the wines feel heavy.
In the glass, Melon de Bourgogne is usually lean, dry, citrusy, and mineral, with notes of lemon, green apple, white flowers, oyster shell, and sea spray. The best examples are deceptively serious: modest in alcohol, sharp with seafood, and capable of aging into more complex, smoky, nutty, saline wines.
