Ryan Stirm began his winemaking career through a love of farming. His passion was for the land and what could be grown but eventually turned towards vineyards specifically. Wine then became his way of documenting a place and time. While most of his winemaking pedigree has been etched in California, he spent time in Margaret River, Australia and the Wachau in Austria (Weingut Tegernseerhof). Abroad he was able to hone his craft making Riesling as well as learning about the best practices in vineyard management. Ryan currently splits his time between the cellar and the vineyards he is contracted to tend in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Companion is his platform for showing the vast potential of Riesling and California viticulture.
Companion Wine Co is a collaboration between 3 Riesling nerds (Ryan Stirm - Winemaker, RVH - Designer, & Andrew Paul Nelson) with the goal of turning on the next generation to something that their parents' generation misunderstood and in many cases ignored. They believe that Riesling is the future (and in many ways the past) of California wine. The first step was to get Riesling into the literal hands of as many people as possible but in an easy, accessible, and natural way. The 1st vintage of Monterey Co. Riesling in a can was 2016, most of which was sold here in CA, NY, & Canada. In 2017 Companion Wine Co tripled production and made a 2nd cuvée of North Coast Malvasia with winemaker Scott Schultz of Jolie Laide. This year they're continuing to grow the Riesling production and have added 2 more cuvées to the arsenal - Edna Valley Sauvignon Blanc made by friend Gina Hildebrand of Lady of The Sunshine & Santa Ynez Valley Grüner Veltliner made by the master himself Graham Tatomer. -west orientation and are open to the Pacific Ocean to the west. We are fortunate to work with such great vineyards
