Notes from the Winery/Importer

A Merlot from another era—rooted in star-shaped limestone, aged in earth and wood, and crafted through biodiversity and natural vinification. Nestled in the western reaches of the Bergerac appellation, the Coquelicot estate spans five hectares and is organically farmed with deep respect for the land. The 2019 vintage, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, is both powerful and elegantly rounded. Designed for aging, this wine benefits from decanting before serving to fully reveal its depth and complexity.

Notes on the Producer

In late 2006, Cécile and Grégoire Rousseau brought their dream to life with the creation of Domaine Coquelicot.

Nestled in the Dordogne, the estate spans five hectares on the rolling hills of Villefranche-de-Lonchat, at the western edge of the Bergerac appellation. The vineyard, rooted in clay-limestone soil, is primarily planted with Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Committed to organic farming, the estate prioritizes sustainability, preserving both the land and those who cultivate it. The wines are a true reflection of this careful stewardship, shaped by meticulous vineyard work and extended aging in the cellar. Maturation takes place in barrels, some of which are new, imparting depth and finesse to the final wines.

Grégoire Rousseau describes the estate’s philosophy: “Through careful attention to the vines and soil, we achieve controlled yields that produce healthy, concentrated grapes. This makes vinification a natural process, guided only by the length of maceration, which varies according to grape variety and parcel.”

The result? Elegant, balanced, and expressive wines that showcase both depth and drinkability—crafted from grape varieties that demand patience and precision.
