  Notes on the Producer

  Wonderwerk: House of Fermentation is Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, two high school friends from Virginia seeking new directions in fermentation. Since our inception we’ve worked with amazing farmers and vineyards from all over California to make wines that everyone can wavelength with. We produce and bottle with our own hands and feet. Every bottle begins as a concept - a look, a feel, an occasion, a vibe - that range from low-intervention to high-innovation production methods in the cellar. Wonderwerk began as a long night on a disco dancefloor finally wound down and we didn’t want the party to end. Now, it’s flowed from there into the wines you see and drink today. Come along for the ride, bring your dancing shoes and an open mind, we promise we won’t disappoint.

  Grapes & Style

  Zinfandel

  Zinfandel is closely tied to California, even though its genetic roots connect it to Croatia and southern Italy’s Primitivo. It has become one of California’s signature grapes, especially in old-vine vineyards across places like Sonoma, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador, and Paso Robles.

  In the vineyard, Zinfandel ripens unevenly, often with raisins and underripe berries in the same cluster. It likes warmth and can build sugar quickly, so the best wines depend on thoughtful farming and picking before ripeness turns into heaviness. Old vines can be especially compelling, naturally limiting yields and adding concentration.

  In the glass, Zinfandel tends toward brambly berry fruit, raspberry jam, black cherry, spice, pepper, and sometimes a wild herbal edge. It can be lush and high in alcohol, but the best versions keep freshness and a sense of snap. We like Zin most when it feels generous but not sweet or overbuilt.

  Pinot Grigio

  Pinot Grigio is the Italian name for Pinot Gris, the pink-skinned white mutation of Pinot Noir. The name often points to a lighter, fresher style, especially from northern Italy, though the grape can make a wide range of wines depending on place and winemaking.

  In the vineyard, Pinot Grigio ripens relatively early and can accumulate sugar quickly, so picking decisions matter. In cooler sites it can stay crisp and citrusy; in warmer sites or with more skin contact, it can become fuller, spicier, and more textured.

  In the glass, Pinot Grigio often shows lemon, pear, green apple, white peach, almond, and a clean mineral edge. The best versions are not just neutral and easy; they have freshness, clarity, and enough texture to feel useful at the table.

  Montepulciano

  Montepulciano is a major central Italian red grape, most famously in Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. It should not be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano, where Vino Nobile is based primarily on Sangiovese. As a grape, Montepulciano is valued for color, generous fruit, and a naturally approachable structure.

  In the vineyard, Montepulciano ripens relatively late and tends to do well in warm, sunny places where it can fully develop. It can produce everything from simple, juicy reds to darker, more structured wines with real depth, depending on farming, yields, and élevage.

  In the glass, Montepulciano often shows black cherry, plum, blackberry, cocoa, leather, spice, and a softly earthy quality. The best examples have enough freshness to balance their dark fruit, making them satisfying, rustic-leaning, and very useful at the table.
